SKI MOUNTAINEERING COURSES

Intro Backcountry Skiing
This one-day course teaches you the fundamentals of backcountry skiing. You’ll get plenty of time skinning up slopes and skiing back down. More importantly, you’ll learn the craft of backcountry decision-making and skiing techniques. Make great strides toward becoming an educated and independent backcountry skier.

Backcountry Skiing Seminar
This is a seven-day comprehensive immersion in backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering. The focus is on technical skiing skills and traveling light, evaluating hazards, and moving through alpine terrain in the most efficient and enjoyable way possible. The course begins with three one-day tours, followed by a day of rest for weary thighs, and finishes with a three-day ski camping trip. Great skiing goes hand in hand with becoming an experienced and independent backcountry skier.

3-Day Estin Hut Ski Tour
Peter Estin Hut is located in a clearing on a timbered saddle just northwest of Charles Peak (12,050’), with a clear view of the Elk and Williams mountains to the south. Centered in a vast forested area, the hut provides access to myriad trails and classic Colorado alpine terrain.

Steep Skiing Clinic
This two-day course is for expert skiers who want to go beyond the not-so-steep black diamonds of the resorts and into the unlimited advanced skiing of the backcountry. Experience the ultimate thrill of dropping into the steeps. Learn to really use your edges. Ski side by side with guides who will share their decision-making and risk-assessment process with you. We spend the first day finding your limits, the second day re-defining them.

Ski Mountaineering Weekend
After this two day course, students will be knowledgeable in the advanced skills involved in climbing and skiing steeper terrain in the backcountry. They will practice skills for safer and efficient travel in the backcountry with an isothermal snowpack. The specific objective of the ski mountaineer is to climb technical terrain and descend the same terrain on skis.

Valdez Heli-Ski Mountaineering
Alaska’s Chugach Mountains have some of the best mountain skiing in the U.S. and arguably the world. On our 8-day trip, we spend a week exploring the steeps of the coastal Chugach range. During the day we ascend jagged 10,000’ peaks, take in the 360-degree Alaskan wilderness panorama, carve virgin turns down fresh powder slopes, and in the evenings we relax at a comfortable Bed and Breakfast. All at a fraction of the cost of a $15,000 heli-skiing trip!
