Our primary cragging areas are Eldorado Canyon and the Flatirons, both in Boulder, and Lumpy Ridge, in Estes Park. All of these areas are superb and quite famous, but also quite different. The Flatirons are famous for easy summit climbs to the defining features of the Boulder skyline. Eldorado Canyon offers primarily face climbing, where good technique trumps strength almost every time. It is a great place to learn to climb well. In these areas, the rock type is sandstone; mostly very solid, but a softer rock than granite. Lumpy Ridge is composed of perfect granite domes with exceptionally solid rock; it’s a crack climbing area that also offers plentiful face features and an unrivaled view of the high peaks. Estes Park is 2,000’ higher than Boulder, so the Boulder climbs are often ideal in fall and spring, and Estes climbs are cooler in summer.
