Matt Lipscomb

Matt moved to the Rockies in 1998 to begin graduate school at the University of Colorado – Boulder. While completing his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, he dedicated much of his spare time to exploring the mountains and deserts of the American West. Through countless trips climbing, skiing, and mountain biking, he gradually realized his passion for the outdoors.

The combination of individual challenge, aesthetic beauty, and a desire to get off the beaten path all conspire to form Matt’s siren song of climbing. From his backyard in Eldorado Canyon and Rocky Mountain National Park, climbing has taken him to countless other locales. He has ascended many of the Colorado 14ers, been awed by the history and scale of Yosemite, scaled peaks in Wyoming’s Wind River Range and Nevada’s Red Rocks NRA, and explored unique limestone cliffs of Thailand, to name a few.

Each season, long before the temperature drops and the snow flies, Matt’s thoughts will turn white and powdery. To him, there is nothing more satisfying than earning his turns in the backcountry – far away from the crowd of the ski resorts. Deep powder, perfect corn, steep chutes, open bowls, alpine glades, and everything in between – sliding on snow always brings a smile to his face. When there is snow on the ground, Matt will typically by found chasing powder in Colorado, Utah, or Canada. Long after the resorts close, he will be seeking out steep and remote lines in the backcountry.

His analytical mind, desire to teach, and passion for the outdoors have drawn him to the profession of guiding. Matt has completed the AMGA Ski Guide and Rock Instructor Courses, Level 1 and 2 AIARE Avalanche Courses, Level 1 AIARE Instructor Training Course, and is a Wilderness First Responder.

When he is not actively enjoying the mountains or planning his next adventure, Matt can usually be found on the ultimate Frisbee field where he competes nationally and internationally with his local club team.
